For me and so many other Black folks, learning somatics that is rooted in spirituality and social justice - means we’ve had to piece together our education. To learn some things from a white practitioner, while recognizing that the full experience of embodiment wasn’t there. To put ourselves in spaces that invisibilize us, while stealing & profiting off of our cultural healing heritages, while making it financially inaccessible to us, and then have to transmute the harm and knowledge inside of ourselves to bring it to our communities.
And honestly, this is LABOR no one should be doing when they’re paying for certifications that are so, so, soooooo expensive.
True embodiment is knowing our connection to the Land, and to everyone else we share this earth with.
So embodiment or spirituality without abolition,
Or without homage to the Land,
Or without education on how oppressive systems have impacted Black and Brown people (as well as trans and queer folks) somatically,
…Is only recreating what’s keeping us away from true liberation.
That’s why I’m so, so excited to invite you to Liberation Practice Field! Where you’ll be learning from, not just me, but also 6 other guest speakers, who have devoted their lives to fighting for our communities.
Che Che Luna: Queer, trans, chicanx. A sex educator, movement and embodiment facilitator, and erotic art maker - on The Power Of Desire. Reclaim your body as a source of knowledge, pleasure, and agency.
Camille Sapara Barton: Writer, artist, and somatic practitioner, with teaching rooted in Black feminism and ecology. On The Power Of Tending Grief. They are the founder of the GEN Grief Toolkit – a collection of embodied grief rituals to support personal and community grief work.
Richie Reseda: formerly-incarcerated, abolitionist music and film producer, content creator, cultural organizer, and creative director. He produced the feature film, SONGS FROM THE HOLE. Richie will come to teach about his organizing history that started in prison. He has once said something I simply can’t ever forget: We’re taught that power is domination, but power is connection. His talk will be about exactly that: Power As Connection.
Artist, author and abolitionist Patrisse Cullors on Abolition As A Tool To Ignite Our Imagination. Re-member that abolition comes in 2 folds: the first one is to destroy the structures killing us and the Land (they’re not broken, they’re doing exactly what they’re supposed to!) and imagine new ways to relate to ourselves, each other and the Land. That’s what we’re doing in Liberation Practice Field, and Patrisse has been doing abolition work before I was even an adult lol.
Leah Manaema Avene: Researcher, educator, therapist, and many other roles, with bloodlines shaped the Pacific Ocean, the islands of Tuvalu, and Ireland. On The Soma as Land. Leah holds a position as Indigenous Pedagogy Lead, and their research focuses on Indigenous knowledge, language and art as holistic, integrative healing processes.
