What if wanting more is what costs me belonging?

Lessons from my Congolese father's death

I don’t talk about him enough, and the reason why is because I only got to know him for the last three months of his life, and I am still unpacking what I learned during his last three months. There is so much. So much.

Today I want to share with you this story after my last workshop, The Somatics of Scarcity. It was so juicy. Thank you for creating such a delicious, tender and rich space.

I think longing is the most tender space we could find ourselves in. I think longing is cast spelling and I know it because of my father. I think there is a reason why shame comes up so easily when we let ourselves long, and I think there is a big reason we shame ourselves out of longing in the name of belonging.

Who would you be if you weren’t negotiating to be liked?

Who would you be if you weren’t ashamed of your own power?

What are you most afraid of never receiving/being?

What are you most afraid of receiving/being?

Those are the questions we touched on tonight, and this is the biggest takeaway.

I hope you enjoy.

Merci Papa.
