As a teenager, I played basket ball for years. Every one told me to so cause I have always been tall (and most probably because I am Black, too…sigh).
I loved it though. Working in teams, building solidarity.
But there was this one thing I simply couldn’t do. And that one thing drove my coach CUCU.
I simply couldn’t yell for the ball.
The truth is, I’ve never been the yelling type. Who yells??!
Anyways, those days, I feel heartbroken when the most sensitive of us are drawn out of organizing spaces because they’re just not the yelling type.
We need absolutely every. body. every one of us.
That includes you, remind my words right now.
So here are some tactics I’ve written down over time on my notes. I’ve seen all of those roles embodied BEAUTIFULLY. And the best part in all of that? You get to do it YOUR WAY.
Finally, I just want to let you know that the best way to belong is to be the brightest version of you. Once I figured out what my gifts were, it was so much easier for me to stop and try yelling. I am not the activist type, I am not the best first front, I’ll be the one organizing support on the backend, however !
