Dear ones,
Welcome to Day 19.
Collectively, we avoid repair because we’ve built a culture where harm is met with punishment instead of radical accountability. Carceral logic teaches us that to admit wrongdoing is to invite exile, not transformation.
But on a more personal level, what I’ve often realised is that often, we fail to hold ourselves accountable because it traces us back to the way we were harmed and never received accountability or repair from our harm-doers. None of us enter the world as harm-doers — we enter as recipients. We receive it and learn how to pass it on, often down the ladder of power. We inherit violence before we ever enact it.
We do harm and refuse to repair because that process of repair would require of us to acknowledge the wounds we’ve spent a lifetime concealing from our own selves.
When repair is required of us, it threatens the story we’ve built to survive. To apologize, to repair, to take responsibility would mean touching the original wound –the one we’ve been hiding from ourselves for years. And that is often what we fear most.
Who am I, outside the wound?
Those are topics we go dive deep into during Liberation Practice Field.
